Cubs in a Pub – Ballinderry 2014

Yes you read the title correctly. Wednesday Night Cubs spent their summer camp in a pub.

Now before anyone phones the ISPCC let’s explain.

The brother of Adrienne, Karen and Fiona has bought a pub “The Tavern” and is using it as a holiday home.
All the pub equipment is still there, tables and chairs, glasses, cooking equipment, optics, pumps and a firm favourite, the thing for washing glasses.

BUT the pumps aren’t connected to kegs of Guinness so let’s not panic.
So that’s where we had our Summer Camp and it was brilliant.

We met at the den and with our trusty driver Joe we headed off for Ballinderry.
2.5 hours later we reached out destination and quickly settled in.

There was much amusement amongst the Cubs at the thought of spending a weekend in a pub and they loved it.

We got everyone set up for the night, the girls had a room to share, the lads were sleeping on the dance-floor, something the Leaders hope won’t happen to them again until they’re at least 21.
A number of games were played before bedtime, Chess, a ball game, even a few hands of poker, again this is the Cubs we’re talking about.

After supper everyone headed to bed.

The following morning we got up and headed to the snug for breakfast, cereal, toast, sausage and rashers.
Once we tidied up we sorted out our bedding and gear ready for inspection. The Leaders do love a good inspection.

Adrienne and Rory took us through the history of Scouting and the essentials such as the promise and law, the handshake, scout sign and the prayer.

After this we had some free time to work on our song, dance, comedy routine for “WEDNESDAY NIGHTS GOT TALENT”

After lunch we headed out to the local playground to get rid of the cobwebs and get some fresh air

We did some pioneering in the evening before dinner and started making a dresser.

A dinner of burgers and chips was followed by the Talent Show, and what a talented group we have, Simon Cowell would have been proud.

We had singing, dancing, acting, jokes, riddles, ball skills and improv.
Once the show had finished a disco kicked off. We danced the night away to “Happy”, “Don’t Stop Believing” and Rory’s favourite “Highway to Hell” which led to a mass outbreak of head banging.

We ended the night watching “The Incredibles” and some of us watch the Champions League final. Well done Madrid, hard luck Madrid.

Sunday morning after breakfast we started packing up and cleaning the pub ready for the off.
As everyone helped it didn’t take long and we were soon ready for lunch before heading for home.

Everyone agreed it was one of the best camps we’ve ever had.

Thanks must go out to the following people

  • Joe Barnes our bus driver
  • Cormac and Laura our Leaders for helping out all weekend (and missing a party)
  • The parents for taking home the rubbish and their kids
  • The Cubs themselves for having a great time and behaving themselves
  • Adrienne, Karen, Fiona and Rory
  • And most importantly to Derek and Amanda for allowing us to use their holiday home

Summer Camp update

Hi all,

We are meeting at the den on Friday at 6.45pm, the bus is leaving at 7pm.  The girls will have beds so they don’t need to bring an airbed, just a sleeping bag but the boys will be on the floor so they will need an airbed and a pillow.  The bus will leave us at the door of the hostel so you won’t need to carry your gear anywhere.

Cubs will NOT need money.

We finish at 1pm on Sunday in Ballinderry for anyone driving down.

Driving directions:-
From Bray to Ballinderry (approx. 2 hours)
Go to M50 and head northbound
At junction 9 take the N7/M7 exit
Stay on the N7/M7 for 129.6km
At junction 23 take exit for Moneygall (R445)
Go through Moneygall past Obama Café (on your left)
Take right turn (R490) for Cloughjordan
Go through Cloughjordan and continue on R490 until you come to T junction (approx. 19km)
Take right into main street Borrisokane
At bottom of street take left turn onto L1092 (Ballinderry Road)

Wednesday 21st May

Hi all,

What a super night to be out on the water.
The sun shone on us all evening.

We had 25 Cubs on the water and more importantly 25 Cubs off the water once we finished.
Everyone had great fun and were very well behaved.
All the Cubs helped with cleaning and stowing the gear away which meant we finished up on time.
Thanks to Cormac and Laura for helping out with the boats and in the water.

Cub Summer Camp 2014 Ballinderry

Dear Parents,

Instead of a Cub Camp this year we are going to a large house (converted pub) in Ballinderry , Co. Tipperary.  Ballinderry is approx. 2 hours drive, close to Borrisokane.  The hostel will be from Friday 23rd May and finish on Sunday 25th May (two nights) and the cost will be €50.  This includes the cost of a bus to bring the Cubs down on Friday evening, however they will need to get lifts home on Sunday at 1pm – the Cubs have been given a map but we will provide more detailed directions next week.

As the Cubs will be sleeping on the floor (the same as our Scout den), they should bring airbeds for sleeping on in their sleeping bags.  They have been given a kit list and a PC form which needs to be completed and returned to the Leaders before the trip.

Please contact one of the Leaders if you have any queries.

Kit List and PC Forms available from the links below.
Please complete the PC Form and return to one of the Leaders.

Wednesday 30th April

Hi all,

We are not on the water next week, you will be told in plenty of time when we are

We were back after our Easter break, we did a round the room of what people had got up to.
Sean won hands down with a trip to Peru.

After that we spent the rest of the night preparing for the upcoming boating season.

Personal Gear:
Wetsuits – if you are buying a new wetsuit please get the full length one not the shorties. Shorties wont keep the kids warm.
Get a tight fitting wetsuit, not one that’ll last a few years, it’s not a school jumper.
The tight fitting suits let in some water which is trapped between the suit and body. The body heats this water and your left reasonably warm.

A loose fitting suit is of no use at all.
Water shoes should be worn also.
Please no Crocs or Wellies

Life Jackets MUST be worn. Our cubs are not old enough to were bouyancy aids. If they want to go on the water with us Life Jackets are a must. We do have a supply in the den but if you have your own all the better.

Please arrive at the den in your gear.
We usually meet at 6.30 on nights we’re on the water.
Make sure to bring a change of clothes, spare footwear, towel and warm hoodie or coat.

The water will be cold, I promise, a sunny day does not mean warm water.

ALL Cubs will be individually checked by one of the Leaders before they leave the den to ensure they’re gear is on correctly and they’re safe to go in the water.

If you have any questions please let us know.

We finished up with a game of arches and headed home
