Water Activities

Hi all,

The boating season starts on 1st May, which is the same night that the tide is in our favour.  Therefore, weather permitting, that will be our first canoeing night.  Cubs should come down in their clothes for canoeing (shorts/tracksuit and top with swimsuit underneath).  They should have sandals/runners to wear in the water; flip flops will not be suitable.  They will also need a towel and change of clothes and footwear for afterwards.  If they have a wetsuit that is great, but it is not essential.

Summer Camp

Hi all,
For the cub summer camp this year we will be going to Powerscourt from Friday 24th May to Sunday 26th May (2 nights) weather permitting.  The cost of the camp is €40.

The cubs will be given a kit list of what to bring with them for the camp and as we hope to do water activities please ensure that they have plenty of old clothes (including socks and runners/sandals) to change into.  A wet suit would be perfect but please don’t feel the need to buy one just for the weekend.

Each cub has been given a permission to camp form.  Please ensure that this has been filled in and returned as cubs will not be allowed to camp if we don’t have this information.

If you have any questions or worries please feel free to contact any of the leaders.

Wednesday 24th April

Hi all,

This week we started with foot drill practicing our right and left turns and falling in two deep. After that Karen took the roll.

We discussed our summer camp which is taking place on the weekend of 25th to 26th May inclusive. Please see note for all the details.

Next Wednesday we are on the water. The boating season starts on the 1st of May so weather permitting that will be our first canoeing night. Please see the note for all details. Fiona showed us the buoyancy aids we will be using and explain the importance of water safety.

Heather and Cormac ran a game of snatch the rasher with us.

Rory told us about Group Council which was happening later that night. All the Group Leaders meet once a month to discuss what’s happening in the Group and to make plans for the coming months.

We had Grand Howl and fell out.

Wednesday 17th April

Hi all,

We spoke again about our Specials Interest Badges, make sure to continue working on them, Plan Do Review.

Some great ideas for SI Badges were discussed, including Pet Care, Writing and Woodcarving.

So get your thinking caps on and remember the Plan Do Review

After that half the group played some games while Rory and Cormac took the newer Cubs outside to go over the Axe, Saw and Knife.

NB No Cubs are EVER allowed to use any of these.
Only when they have moved to Scouts and then be instructed, tested and permitted by the Leaders will they be allowed near them.
This exercise was to demystify them and to make sure the Cubs understand just how dangerous they can be.

Both Rory and Cormac showed them the parts of each tool, how to use them safely and how to care for them.

To finish we went around the whole pack including the Leaders and introduced ourselves and told one interesting fact about ourselves.

Wednesday 10th April

Hi all,

Tonight we spoke about our badges. Especially for those who have just come up from Beavers make sure to take off your Beaver badge but keep them safe.
You can sew them onto a Camp Blanket like Karen and Adrienne or sew them onto a Hoodie like Rory does.

Either way make sure to keep them safe and swap with other Cubs or Scouts.

We spoke about our Specials Interest Badges, make sure to continue working on them, Plan Do Review.

We congratulate Stella who did a great project, planning and making a 3 course meal. Lots of work was put into it and it certainly sets the standard.
